energy in saying this tonight was not what the president's energy was last night and the president's showing today energy on the campaign trail that he didn't show last night. i'm just curious to know why you think he didn't show it last night. why not say that is a lie, that is factually incorrect. >> the problem is if you're the challenger, you have to go out there and have a great debate, especially if you're a challenger behind, you have to go out and take it to the incumbent. if you are in fact the incumbent, you help the challenger by getting down in the mud and brawling. if you're the incumbent who is ahead, the last thing you want to do is get down in the mud and brawl with the challenger, because ultimately, strategically, that only helps the challenger. i think the president was very presidential last night. he laid out his case. he stayed on the facts. he did what he was supposed to do. >> ralph, you don't believe he was shifting his position or arguing something else on that stage last night that is different from what he's been saying on the campaign trail? >> no, i do

live from mitt romney. he's now campaigning with new energy and momentum after his showing in the debate last night. plus, big bird thrust into campaign politics and on the defensive. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." >>> only 33 days to election and an entirely new dynamic in the battle between president obama and mitt romney. the republican nominee is widely seen as the winner of last night's debate while even the president's strongest supporters now concede he was not at the top of his game. and now the president is back out there on the campaign trail. he's getting ready to speak at a rally over at the university of wisconsin in madison. we're goingo be hearing from him live this hour. but first, listen to what he said about mitt romney at a rally earlier today before he left denver. >> when i got on to the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. [ laughter ] but it couldn't have been mitt romney because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor th

of virginia as well because, number one on my list is to take full advantage of all our energy resources, our oil, our coal, our gas, our nuclear, our renewables. and i know you care a lot more about coal than the other ones i just mentioned, so let me just remind you that when the president was running for office, he said that if you built a new coal fire plant, well, you would go bankrupt, and the head of the e.p.a. has also said that the regulations on burning coal are now so stringent it's virtually impossible to build a new coal fire plant. well, i don't believe in putting our coal under the ground fore. i believe we should take advantage of it, put american workers back to work, and use a resource that's abundant and cheap and can be burned in a clean way. by the way, i also believe in oil and gas. i believe we should develop our resources. i believe within eight years america -- north america, rather, should be energy-independent, and that requires all those sources of energy. that will keep the price at the pump moderated. it will keep the price of electricity moderated. it will also

for balancing the budget, small business growth, energy independence, improving schools and new trade agreements. wolf, we all know that likability in the end sometimes matters on these nights a lot more than even the details. wolf. >> jessica, what's the obama campaign saying about what jim acosta just reported that romney finally is giving some details as far as potential deductions that he would curtail? what are they saying about that? >> reporter: they're already pushing back against that new revealed detail saying that that doesn't even help the middle class, that it could even mean a tax increase for the middle class. in a blog post on what they call their truth telling website they say that "it would raise taxes for millions of middle class families." and it says in part "here's the problem, many families deduct more than $17,000 now." they say even on health care there's a more than $15,000 deduction. and then they go through more deductions. they say this could mean a tax increase for some families. wouldn't be surprised if that one comes up tonight, wolf. >> i think it probably almost

for the american public so he can point to these three ways he would change energy policies. >> all along, people are saying we haven't hearda lot of specifics in this campaign and they're hoping in the debates to get more specifics, so you have to balance the desire for spechks for putting meat on the bones. >> anderson, problem with this kind of approach is narrowing down and getting in a little box is that the debates by nature should be more conversational. this is a really conversation with people at home. that's particularly true of the format we're seeing tonight. what you found say with a matter debater like reagan, he would get two or three facts into an answer, then build a conversation around the facts and that appealed to people more. they don't want to hear a rat a tat tat. >> that's what the debates have become. >> that's what mitt romney is used to. for the people who say he's had an advantage because he's done 20 debates, he's done 20 debates with lots of people on the stage. it's totally different. >> let's take a look, we got another interview with michelle obama. now to wolf. >
